When cleaning no longer shines, it’s time to consider hardwood floor refinishing. Other indications that you may need it include warping, stubborn stains, deep scratches that have damaged the floor’s protective coating, or areas where the coating has worn away to the extent that the wood fibers are exposed.
A tongue-and-groove floor that’s ¾” thick can be refinished several times during its long lifespan. Engineered flooring, which is manufactured multi-ply, can also be refinished, but not as often. The frequency depends largely on the floor’s hardness rating, as well as daily wear and tear. Bear in mind, too, that some prefinished products don’t need to be refinished as often as those that were finished on site.
Hardwood floor refinishing can be a time-consuming process that may take about 3 days to complete. Although you might want to do the job yourself, think carefully about hiring a professional. Whatever your final decision is, however, be sure to talk to a flooring retailer first.
By traditional methods, the entire process of hardwood floor refinishing takes place over a series of days to allow for curing and drying. Depending on the procedure used (traditional or sandless), it may even take as long as a week before the floor can be walked on.
